Welcome

Hello and welcome! I am so excited to have you and your child join our first-grade classroom community. First grade is a year full of growth, curiosity, and confidence-building, and we can’t wait to learn together!


About Our Classroom

Our classroom is a safe, caring, and engaging space where students are encouraged to be kind, curious, and courageous learners. I believe every child can succeed, and we celebrate effort, progress, and individuality.


What We Learn in First Grade

Throughout the year, students will grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

📚 Reading & Writing

  • Building strong reading skills and a love of books

  • Writing complete sentences and stories

  • Using phonics, spelling patterns, and sight words

➕ Math

  • Adding and subtracting within 100

  • Understanding numbers, place value, and word problems

  • Exploring math through hands-on activities

🌍 Science & Social Studies

  • Asking questions and exploring the world around us

  • Learning about plants, animals, communities, and seasons

  • Developing curiosity and critical thinking


Classroom Expectations

We follow Whole Brain Teaching rules to help everyone learn and feel safe:

  • Follow directions quickly

  • Raise your hand for permission to speak

  • Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat

  • Make smart choices

  • Make our dear team stronger
  • Keep your eyes on the target 

Positive behavior and effort are always encouraged and celebrated!


Communication

Strong communication between school and home is important.

  • Please check folders/backpacks daily

  • Important updates will be shared through our class communication system

  • Feel free to reach out with questions or concerns at any time


How Families Can Help at Home

  • Read with your child every day

  • Practice red/sight words and math facts

  • Encourage independence and responsibility

  • Celebrate your child’s hard work and growth


A Note to Students

I am so happy you are here! First grade is going to be an amazing adventure full of learning, laughter, and new friendships. Remember: it’s okay to make mistakes—that’s how we learn!
