are you guys I just want to stop by and read you another short little story we are focusing on a biography report right now about a famous person responsible person or a hero in sight. better time then to bust out our thing is like our class is favorite book but women who dared and we're very lucky that our friend Miss Josephine donated the store classroom so it got two story already it is about Susan LA flesche picotte and this woman I picked her story because she's actually have she was raised as part of the Omaha nation which is a Native American tribe and that is something that we are focusing on his social studies so this is like a social studies video about biography on fictional text American Staffing South let's learn about Susan la flesche picotte she is a heroic healer this is me United States and 1865 to 1915 so Susan was raised as a part of the Omaha nation of Nebraska during a time when the lives of the Plains Indians were rapidly changing her father was chief of the My Tribe and her mother was the daughter of the first Army physician in Nebraska they wanted their children to live sorry they wanted their children to learn to live in both worlds so they send them English speaking School oh yeah and so small that she could take naps inside her left her lift lid school desk she was a curious child in Italian 10 student straddling two cultures wasn't easy and one incident demonstrate deep divide between them and Indian woman became l and a local white doctor was sent for but he refused to come Susan watch the woman die it has such a powerful impact on her she dedicated her life to giving health care for her people when she was 14 she attended the Elizabeth Institute for young ladies and later the Hampton Institute in Virginia Which once again please turn a tug-of-war now between the new belief in the Life stars were old traditions and heritages but her success as a student gave her the confidence and courage to do something bold apply to medical school she was accepted by the Women's Medical College Susan graduated in return home as the first Native American physician in the entire country ever ever doctor that was a Native American think that's amazing but that's when the hard work really began Susan never ever ever turn down a patient while they were they were Indian or white she had over 1,200 patients spread out over 450 Square stop making house calls on Horseback if all types of weather frequently the ride was so rough she rides only to find a saddle bag full of broken thermometers and frequently sorry she endured snowstorms blazing he and everything in between but her patients always came before her own comfort and safety not only did Susan tend to the sick she also taught the importance of proper hygiene preventive care she witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of alcoholism and fought tirelessly to combat it by educating people about addiction despite everything she was paid only $500 a year over the whole year she only got $500 while male doctors were turning ten times more that than that Susan married had children and continue to work as a doctor finally in 1913 to you Susan La flesche picotte Memorial Hospital was built in walthill Nebraska honoring the woman who devoted her life to healing wounds in both bodies and attitudes yay season so I was just a quick little story for our biography project that kind of gets you excited about mean people together and something that touches on the Native American tribes that we were talking about before but that's okay cuz we're going to be staying together just like that woman who dared to think you just seen and I'll see you guys later
