This Writing Club will use the Greek Myths/Tall Tales to help us improve our writing skills. We will target:

Writing the lead and the conclusion- how they need to connect
Adding sensory description

Examining writing prompts- an identifying the type of writing
Poems/recipes
Informative notes- using the 5W's
Steps of the writing process

Who?- Students in grades 5

Where?- On Office 365

When?- During our extended Spring Break

What?- Learning about the mythology/famous stories in the Greek Myths/Tall Tales in the U.S.

Why?- To practice and enhance our writing skills.

Assignment- We will have a completed Writing Anthology when we return in April. Each student will have completed two of their “Best of their Best” one pagers to be included. Use your WONDERS Book to read the Tall Tale of “Mighty Kate” p. 238 and/or online resources.

You are to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the sinking of the two luxury liners. Good writers organize their writing in a pre-write, a way to gather facts before they write.
Complete the following as your pre-write.

Length?
Number of people/Capacity?
Why it sank?
Number of people on board
Number of people who died

Write a 1 page essay using your pre-write as a guide. Tell your reader how they are similar and how they were different. Was there anything that could have changed the events? Use the language of a compare and contrast essay- like, alike, they differ, different, the same, similar, dissimilar, on the contrary,etc.
Follow the 5 paragraph essay format- Lead, supporting paragraphs, and strong conclusion.
